A family rather than one model

Anthropic introduced Claude 3 on March 4, 2024. The family comprised Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, with Opus and Sonnet available at announcement and Haiku following later. The models included image understanding alongside language capabilities.

The release encouraged teams to choose a model tier for a task instead of treating the largest available model as the automatic default.

Split the work by difficulty

A product-content workflow contains several different jobs: reading a brief, finding missing information, checking a draft, and resolving ambiguous requirements. Those jobs do not necessarily need the same level of reasoning.

A smaller model can handle a well-defined preliminary step, while a more capable model reviews exceptions. The routing rule must be visible and measurable; otherwise, a nominally cheaper architecture can quietly accumulate repeated calls.

Evaluate the boundary

Test the exact conditions that trigger escalation. Include a blurry source image, conflicting brand instructions, and an unfamiliar product category. Track whether the first model recognizes uncertainty instead of returning a confident guess. For image production teams, remember that understanding an image is a separate function from generating one: this announcement did not turn Claude into an image generation API.
