The October disclosure
On October 15, 2026, Anthropic described giving a small METR team access comparable to its internal risk-assessment staff. METR is to publish its assessments, subject to specified confidentiality boundaries. The article was clarified on October 16 and also describes other evaluator relationships at different levels of access.
This is an announcement about an evaluation arrangement, not a published certification that every model or use case is safe. The depth of access, independence of the evaluator, and freedom to report are central to understanding what the arrangement can establish.
Our analysis: ask what the evaluator could actually inspect
A benchmark score usually answers a narrower question than a buyer needs. It may show how a model performs on a defined task set, while revealing little about incident handling, operational controls, or the effect of a particular deployment configuration.
When reviewing an assessment, identify the evaluated model revision, tools, permissions, and testing period. Ask whether the evaluator could examine failure cases or only run a fixed public interface. Also check which conclusions are observations and which depend on information supplied by the provider.
Creative businesses can use the same discipline on a smaller scale. An external reviewer of an image workflow should see representative reference assets, rejected outputs, and the approval process, not only a portfolio of successful images. Evaluation becomes more useful when it includes how the team handles exceptions.
Read evidence with its boundaries intact
Our recommendation is to retain a short evidence register for major AI suppliers. Record what was evaluated, what remains outside scope, and when the review should be revisited. This makes procurement decisions easier to explain and prevents an old report from silently becoming a permanent assurance.
- Distinguish provider testing from an independent assessment.
- Look for disclosed access limits and restrictions on publication.
- Check whether the evaluated version matches the service being purchased.
- Treat a report as one input to a deployment decision, alongside your own workload tests.
