A new Haiku release

Anthropic introduced Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026, emphasizing frequent, cost-sensitive tasks such as classification, summarization, and compacting context. The release also introduced adjustable effort within the Haiku class.

That combination made it possible to examine model size and effort setting together when optimizing repetitive work.

A fast path needs a clear boundary

Routine requests can often use a constrained model route, while unusual cases require more attention. The difficult part is identifying those exceptions before they become silent errors. A routing policy should be based on observable conditions and reviewed outcomes rather than the model's confidence alone.

For a business application, response speed matters most when the result is immediately useful and does not create a later correction task.

Measure at production scale

Compare accepted results per unit of cost, including escalation and retries. Test burst traffic and review slow-tail latency. Keep a sample of successful requests for quality checks, because an apparently completed task can still be wrong. Adjustable effort is valuable when the team can connect a setting to a measurable improvement in its own workload.
