The release
OpenAI made gpt-image-1 available for image generation and editing on April 23, 2025. This is the starting point of our GPT Image API timeline.
Start with one image brief
A useful first project is a repeatable product shot: one approved product reference, a defined background, and a fixed output size. Ask a reviewer to check product shape, packaging text, and composition separately. An attractive result can still be unusable if it changes a label.
Keep your initial evaluation small enough to inspect every output. Save the request settings next to each candidate so that a successful image can inform the next brief. The illustrative product image below is a creative concept, not an output benchmark for this release.

Measure usable outputs
For a business case, compare total spend with the number of approved assets. A cheaper request that needs repeated regeneration may cost more per published image. Include review time and manual corrections in the decision.
Store API credentials on your server, separate development and production keys, and keep a record of the exact model ID. These choices make later changes easier to diagnose.
Reading this history today
This is a retrospective release note. Before starting a new integration, check the current model catalog and retirement schedule; a historical API example is not a promise that the model remains available.
