Two distinct directions
Meta released Llama 3.2 on September 25, 2024. The family included 11B and 90B vision models, alongside 1B and 3B text-only models designed for edge and mobile use.
The distinction is essential: the smaller device-oriented variants did not automatically inherit the visual capabilities of the larger models.
Define what must happen locally
A mobile workflow may need to classify a short note offline, while a server performs a more demanding analysis later. Local execution can reduce dependence on a network connection, but it introduces device constraints such as memory pressure, battery use, and variable hardware performance.
For image-oriented applications, decide whether the device needs to inspect the image itself or simply prepare metadata and manage the user interaction.
Test the constrained environment
Measure behavior on the least capable device that the product intends to support. Include a cold start, a busy device, and an interrupted connection. Preserve a clear fallback when a request cannot be completed locally. Evaluate visual understanding separately using the appropriate checkpoint and input format. Treating all members of a model family as one capability set can create avoidable integration failures.
