The API family arrives
OpenAI released GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano in the API on August 7, 2025. The family supported configurable reasoning effort, giving developers another dimension to consider alongside model size.
For application teams, this meant that model selection and request configuration could no longer be evaluated independently.
The default may not fit every interaction
A background research task can tolerate a different response time from an inline form check. An application that uses one model and one reasoning setting everywhere may spend too much on routine work or underinvest in the few decisions that are difficult.
A practical design assigns a budget to each stage and defines when the system should escalate to a more capable route.
Compare completed tasks
Use the same input set across model sizes and reasoning settings. Measure full latency, usage, and the amount of correction needed before a result is accepted. Include ordinary requests as well as edge cases. For image teams, a general model can help interpret or organize a brief, but image generation remains a distinct output capability with its own model selection and review process.
