The March API release
OpenAI released GPT-5.4 on March 5, 2026. Its model documentation describes text-and-image inputs, configurable reasoning, and a context window above one million tokens.
The broader release included capabilities for tool-oriented work. Integrating those features requires checking the API route and supported controls rather than changing only the model name.
More tools require better selection
Giving a model many tools can increase the amount of information it must consider. A well-designed application exposes relevant capabilities and provides clear descriptions of when they should be used. Tool access should remain limited to what the task requires.
For a production workflow, each operation needs a defined result and a predictable failure response. That makes it easier to distinguish a model's poor choice from an unavailable service.
Migrate with a task-level budget
Measure the complete run, including tool calls, retries, and context carried between steps. Set limits for both cost and duration. Test a tool failure and an interrupted request before enabling the new route broadly. A professional-work model earns its place when the application can turn its capabilities into reliable, reviewable outcomes.
