A more predictable response shape

OpenAI introduced Structured Outputs on August 6, 2024. The feature lets supported models produce responses that follow a supplied JSON schema, improving reliability when an application expects named fields and defined types.

Schema adherence addresses structure. It does not prove that a value is factually correct, suitable for a customer, or authorized for use in a downstream operation.

Where it helps a creative pipeline

A production brief might require a product identifier, output size, background preference, and a list of approved colors. A consistent object is easier to validate and pass to the next stage than free-form prose that must be interpreted repeatedly.

The application should still compare identifiers with its own database and reject unsupported dimensions. Unknown information needs an explicit representation rather than an invented value inserted to satisfy a field.

Structure is a contract, not proof. Specify Fields, types and allowed values. Generate Request a response in the agreed schema. Validate Check facts and business rules. Route Accept, clarify or send for review.

Design for the exceptional response

Include refusal, incomplete generation, and validation failure in the interface contract. Test optional fields, empty arrays, and unusually long descriptions. Keep business rules outside the model where they can be checked deterministically. The result is a cleaner boundary: the model organizes the request, while the application decides whether the request is valid and what action may follow.
