An interoperability proposal
Google announced the Agent2Agent protocol on April 9, 2025, with support from a broad group of technology partners. A2A was designed to help agents communicate and coordinate tasks across different systems.
The announcement concerned the interface between agents. It did not remove the need to define ownership, permissions, or completion criteria for the business process they share.
A handoff needs a contract
If one agent prepares a brief and another creates a draft, both sides need to agree on the required inputs, the expected result, and how errors are reported. A message saying the task is done is insufficient when the receiving system cannot inspect the output.
Cross-system workflows also need a clear way to cancel work, avoid duplicate actions, and identify which component is responsible for an incomplete step.
Begin with an observable exchange
Choose a workflow where each stage produces a concrete artifact and a status that can be checked. Use stable task identifiers and preserve a record of the handoff. Keep sensitive operations behind the receiving system's own authorization checks. Interoperability is useful when it reduces integration friction without making the underlying business process harder to understand or control.
