A historical governance milestone
The European Union's AI Act entered into force on August 1, 2024. The European Commission described a risk-based framework, with obligations and implementation stages that depend on the system and its use.
Entering into force did not mean every provision applied immediately. This article records that historical milestone rather than presenting a current legal assessment for a particular business.
Start with a factual inventory
An organization cannot assess an AI deployment it has not mapped. A useful inventory names the application, its purpose, the people affected, the data it processes, and the team responsible for it. It should also distinguish model suppliers from the organization putting a complete system into use.
For marketing and image production, record how assets are generated, reviewed, labeled, and distributed. Those operational details are more useful than a broad declaration that the company uses AI responsibly.
Keep evidence with the workflow
Store provider documentation, relevant contract terms, and internal review decisions with the project record. Revisit that record when a use case changes, not only when a model version changes. Legal applicability requires checking the current rules and the actual deployment; a historical announcement alone cannot determine an organization's obligations.
