The FLUX.1 launch

Black Forest Labs introduced its FLUX.1 image model family on August 1, 2024. The release included variants with different access and licensing arrangements, making the exact model edition an important part of any evaluation.

For studios, this was another sign that image generation would be a competitive production tool category, with several approaches to quality, speed, and deployment.

A good-looking sample is only a beginning

A portfolio image shows what can happen under favorable conditions. A production test asks whether a model can repeatedly follow a brief: preserve product shape, place text correctly, maintain a visual style, and handle revisions without introducing new defects.

The right comparison set includes ordinary work as well as impressive scenes. Product packshots, simple layouts, and repeated variations often expose limitations that a dramatic standalone image does not.

Make the comparison reproducible

Use the same briefs, output dimensions, and review rubric across models. Record the number of attempts needed to obtain an accepted asset. Check the terms for the specific variant rather than assuming all FLUX.1 releases share one license.
