The release

Google released gemini-nano-banana-2.1 on October 6, 2026, with improvements to text, repeated edits, and wide compositions. The preceding Gemini 3.1 Flash Image model was deprecated without a shutdown date in that notice.

Build an evaluation from prior corrections

Look at the edits your team most often makes by hand. Turn those into a small set of briefs: a layout with exact wording, a product that must survive several revisions, or a composition intended for a wide placement.

Inspect every intermediate version in a repeated-edit test. A good final background does not compensate for a product detail that drifted during the sequence. Keep approved stages so the team can return to a known reference.

Check the output where it will be used

For wide compositions, define the safe area and intended crop before generating. Review important text and product details in the final placement. For text-heavy work, compare the rendered wording against the brief character by character.

Use the same acceptance rubric for the previous and new models. Report cost per approved image and the amount of correction needed, rather than selecting only the best-looking examples.

Move in stages

Confirm the exact model ID is available to your API key’s group. Update a limited workflow, inspect logs and output handling, then expand. A deprecation notice without a date still belongs in your model inventory, but it should not be presented as an announced shutdown deadline.
