A dedicated decision endpoint

OpenAI introduced the Decisions API in beta on October 6, 2026. The interface evaluates text, images, or both and returns typed answers, such as a choice, probability, or rubric-based score, using GPT-6 Luna.

This is a different task shape from asking a general model to write a paragraph and then extracting a decision from it.

A typed answer still needs calibration

A score is useful only when the application knows how to interpret it. A classification threshold that works on a clean evaluation set may behave differently on ambiguous, low-quality, or unfamiliar inputs.

For an image workflow, a decision service might help route assets for review. It should not silently turn a probabilistic assessment into an irreversible business action.

Structure is a contract, not proof. Specify Fields, types and allowed values. Generate Request a response in the agreed schema. Validate Check facts and business rules. Route Accept, clarify or send for review.

Define the uncertain path

Create examples near the boundary between categories and measure the cost of each error type. Establish a review band for uncertain results and monitor a sample of accepted decisions. Version the question, rubric, and model together so changes can be evaluated. A dedicated interface can simplify integration, but the application remains responsible for deciding what action a returned value justifies.
