A reasoning-model preview
OpenAI released o1-preview and o1-mini on September 12, 2024. The models emphasized reasoning, introducing a different option for tasks where a rapid first response was less important than working through a difficult problem.
The preview status and supported features were part of the release context. A reasoning model should not be assumed to accept every parameter or tool interface used by an earlier general-purpose model.
Match the model to the decision
Complex planning, debugging, and constraint reconciliation can benefit from additional deliberation. A simple label extraction may not. Giving every task the same reasoning budget can make an application slower without improving the result that the user sees.
For an image workflow, a planning stage might resolve a complicated brief before generation. Its value should be measured by fewer rejected images or less manual revision, rather than by the length of its explanation.
Evaluate correctness independently
Use problems with an answer or acceptance test that can be checked outside the model. Include cases with insufficient information and conflicting constraints. Record wall-clock time and full request cost alongside success. A confident, detailed response remains a proposal until the application or reviewer has verified the parts that matter.
