The April reasoning update
OpenAI released o3 and o4-mini on April 16, 2025. The launch expanded its reasoning-model lineup, with attention to coding, mathematics, science, and visual reasoning.
These were models for interpreting and reasoning about inputs. Their ability to analyze an image should be distinguished from an image-generation model that returns a new visual asset.
Visual reasoning needs grounded questions
A model can inspect a diagram or screenshot, but the application must specify what decision is required. Checking whether a layout meets a spacing rule is different from asking whether it looks attractive. The first can often be evaluated against a reference; the second requires a defined review rubric.
For product imagery, use explicit checks for visible details and avoid inviting the model to invent hidden specifications.
Review the chain of work
If a task uses tools, inspect both the intermediate evidence and the final result. A correct-looking conclusion may still depend on a misread chart or an incorrect calculation. Track tool errors separately from reasoning errors so that fixes target the right layer. A reasoning upgrade is valuable when it makes a verifiable task more reliable, not merely when it produces a more elaborate explanation.
