A new API foundation

OpenAI released the Responses API on March 11, 2025, alongside built-in tools and the Agents SDK. The launch brought agent-oriented interactions into a unified API surface.

For developers, the change was more substantial than renaming a request method. A response could contain different kinds of output and tool activity, rather than only a single text message.

Design around typed events

An application should distinguish text, tool requests, tool results, and incomplete work. Treating every response as a string makes it difficult to display progress, recover from errors, or explain why an operation failed.

In an image-production workflow, one stage may retrieve approved references while another produces or reviews an asset. Keeping those operations identifiable improves both debugging and usage accounting.

A bounded agent workflow. Define Task, permissions budget and stop rule. Act Use the smallest necessary tool scope. Verify Inspect the result and handle failures. Review Approve consequential external actions.

Migrate one path at a time

Select a representative workflow and preserve its existing acceptance tests. Check streaming behavior, stored state, tool errors, and retry handling before expanding the migration. Do not assume that a successful text-only request proves every tool path is compatible. Keep credentials and application permissions outside model-generated content, and make externally visible actions explicit in the orchestration layer.
