Developer access to local intelligence

Apple announced its Foundation Models framework on June 9, 2025, giving developers access to the on-device model behind Apple Intelligence. The announcement described capabilities available within supported applications and devices, including operation without a network connection.

That created an integration option distinct from sending every inference request to a remote API.

Offline capability is a product feature

A field worker, traveler, or retail employee may need an application to remain useful with an unreliable connection. Local processing can support a narrow task in that setting, but the product still has to handle unsupported devices and unavailable model resources.

The application should make the distinction visible rather than presenting a remote fallback as if it were the same operation under identical conditions.

Choose a bounded native use case

A good first project might summarize a short note or convert approved text into structured fields. Test the task on the supported device range and include memory pressure and interrupted app sessions. Keep the acceptance criteria separate from the implementation route. That allows the team to decide whether local inference improves the experience instead of adopting it solely because the framework is available.
