One brand, several products

Google announced on February 8, 2024 that Bard would become Gemini, alongside Gemini Advanced powered by Ultra 1.0. The announcement brought the assistant into a broader Gemini ecosystem spanning consumer experiences and developer platforms.

The shared name made the direction clearer, but it also made product distinctions more important. An assistant subscription, a model identifier, and an API account serve different purposes.

What buyers should separate

A marketing team may want a ready-to-use assistant. A developer may need a stable endpoint, usage reporting, and service credentials. Those requirements should be evaluated independently, even when both products carry the same brand. Purchasing access to one interface should never be treated as evidence that another integration is included.

Write the product name, access method, billing owner, and intended workflow into the evaluation document. That simple record prevents confusion when a trial becomes a production project.

A lesson for image workflows

Image understanding and image generation are separate capabilities. A model that can inspect a photograph does not necessarily produce editable image files. When comparing an API with a consumer demonstration, verify the actual request and response formats. Test one complete task—from a supplied product reference to a saved, reviewed deliverable—before building the surrounding workflow.
